Back Forward Help

Overview

The Food Diary is the heart and soul of Figwee. It is where you record the foods you consume for a given day. The Food Diary page is selected by clicking on "Food Diary" in the top navigation bar. The Food Diary page contains the My Foods list in the left display panel, the Food Diary itself in the large center panel, Nutrition Facts in the upper right display panel, and an information Chart in the lower right panel. The rest of the help information below focuses on the center Food Diary panel.

Diary Date. The Food Diary shows and records entries for one day at a time. The active day is known as the Figwee Diary Date. This is the date you select using the left / right buttons at the top of Figwee, or through the Calendar window. When you first bring up Figwee, the current date will be selected for you automatically, so if you are making Food Diary entries for "today" you usually don't have to change the diary date. For more information, see Diary Date.

Adding an Entry to The Food Diary

There are two ways to add an item to the Food Diary: Search and from an existing "My Foods" item.

Add Food Entry Using Search

Search will allow you to look for a food item in the Figwee database to enter into the Food Diary view. Call up search by clicking the Add button at the top right of the diary view.

In the search box, type in the first few letters of the name of the food. As you type, Search will show photos of matching food items. When you see the food you wish to add to the diary, just click on the photo. The Search dialog will close and the food entry will have been added to the Food Diary view.

Add Diary Entry From "My Foods"

You can also add a food entry to the Food Diary from your "My Foods" items. My Foods provides a way of saving your most frequently used items, as well as the foods you have customized. You can add a "My Foods" item to the Food Diary by clicking on the photo of the item in the My Foods view, by clicking on the "plus" button of the My Foods item, or by dragging and dropping the My Foods item onto the Food Diary.

Removing an Entry From the Food Diary

To remove an item from the Food Diary, simply click the "X" button for the food entry you wish to remove. A dialog box will come up asking you to confirm the removal. Note that removing an entry from the Food Diary does not delete it entirely from the database of foods; it is just removed from the list of food entries for that specific diary date. You can search again for the food item and add it back anytime you wish.

What Gets Updated on Add / Remove? When you add or remove a food entry from the Food Diary, the Nutrition Facts totals, and the selected progress chart are automatically updated. See Nutrition Facts for more information.

Editing a Food Diary Entry

When you add a food to the diary, it will be set to a default portion. This is either the portion selected by Figwee, or, in the case of My Foods items, the portion you selected. To adjust the portion amount actually consumed this time, you "edit" the food entry. To edit a food diary entry, click the "pencil" button next to the food you wish to edit. When you do, the PortionRight dialog will be displayed which will allow you to visually adjust the portion. See Portion Selection for more information.

Saving a Food Diary Entry to My Foods

Once you have made a food diary entry, you can save it to your My Foods for easy use in the future. You do this by clicking the "heart" button. My Foods is your list of favorite foods and foods you want to customize. When you save a Food Diary entry to My Foods, the portion and quantity of the food entry are preserved and become the default for the next time you add that My Foods item to the Food Diary. See My Foods for more.

Grouping Food Diary Entries By Color

If you right-click on a food diary entry, a special context menu will appear. A group of choices on this menu allow you to set a tab color for the diary entry. The meaning of the colors is up to you...this is simply a way for you to arbitrarily organize your food diary items. See below for how to sort the food diary list by color.

Sorting the Food Diary List

You can sort the food diary entry list by right clicking on a food in the diary view and choosing the sort order from the context menu. The available sort options are: the order in which you entered the items, the food name, the number of calories in the food entry, or by your selected color. Once you have selected a sort order for the Food Diary view, it remains in effect until you explictly change it. When you add new food entries, they will automatically be inserted in the proper place in the diary list based on your selected sort order.

Printing the Food Diary List

You can print the food diary list by clicking on the little printer button in the food diary view header area. When you do, a new browser window will open with only the items from the diary view displayed against a plain background. Your computer's standard print dialog will automatically be invoked.

Drag and Drop. As mentioned above, you can drag and drop a My Foods item into the Food Diary view, however, the reverse is not true. The Food Diary is only a drop targets; you can't drag an item out of the food diary list. To add an item to My Foods from the food diary list, use the "heart" button next to the food entry.
